Anglia Ruskin launches new vibrant music for 2009 graduation ceremonies

2/10/2009

new work for  brass commemorates 150 years of Anglia Ruskin University

Edward Gregson, one of Britain's most respected composers, has composed  specially commissioned ceremonial music for use at Anglia Ruskin University's graduation ceremonies.  The composition for brass quintet will be played for the first time during November's graduations to help commemorate the 150th Year Anniversary    of The Cambridge School of Art, founded by John Ruskin, which forms the institution we now know today. The official anniversary event was widely celebrated during 2008.

Edward Gregson's Ceremonial for Brass Quintet was written earlier this year and is typical of his fresh and distinct tonal voice. Better known in recent years for his concertos for various instruments, the main thread running through his early career was a series of innovative works for brass.

Speaking about the opportunity to create a piece of music for Anglia Ruskin, Edward Gregson said: ‘When I was asked if I would be interested in writing a new ceremonial work to commemorate the 150th Anniversary of John Ruskin's foundation of the Cambridge School of Art, I was delighted to be able to accept.  I have written a lot of music for wind and brass and so felt confident of writing a work suitable for a graduation - which is always such a memorable occasion, particularly of course for the students involved.'
