ILM comment on the UKCES Ambition 2020 report
29/07/2010
Penny de Valk, Chief Executive of the Institute of Leadership & Management, comments on the UKCES Ambition 2020 report:
"Forecasts of low growth in the UK economy combined with the UKCES's Ambition 2020 report on skills paint a worrying picture for the UK's future prosperity.
"As the report highlights, improving the quality of leadership and management in the UK is one of the most important challenges businesses face. If the UK is to remain globally competitive this management skills gap must be addressed by government, business and individuals alike, as the ability to manage and lead well is key to increased productivity and prosperity.
"Our own research shows that 60% of managers did not choose to move into the role - they are 'reluctant managers'. These managers need to be encouraged to develop the skills and purpose to make a difference in this crucial role.
"We also know from speaking to chief executives about what they want from their managers that a strong and purposeful approach, adaptability, people skills and financial acumen are the core skills required. These are skills that can be developed and that UK plc urgently needs.
"The UK is brimming with talented people and untapped potential, however awareness levels must be raised of the management development options available. This means that we need the skills system to adapt, business incentivised to invest in skills and a change in attitude towards training and qualifications."
